PTO News
Thank you to all the students who participated in our recent contest for Box Tops for Education! Most of the grades met the goal (number of students times 10 Box Tops) and we will announce the ice-cream party at a later date.
Here are the results showing how many each grade collected:
Kindergarten - 111
First Grade -210
Second Grade - 238
Third Grade - 285
Fourth Grade - 90
Fifth Grade - 152
Sixth Grade - 245
Seventh Grade - 237
Eighth Grade - 93
The Grand Total for the Box Top Collection was 1661. The average collected per student was 14.7. Since this surpasses the goal, all grades will get a sundae party!
Thank you for your help in clipping, counting and bagging these and for collecting so many! Please continue to save the Box Tops for Education all year long and be sure and check any package before you toss it away!
Throughout the school year, the Platte Center PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) sponsors functions for the students. We would like to introduce you to the fun events that occur:
- Donut Delight is held after the first and third semesters. The school children and their families are invited for donuts, coffee, and juice at 7:30 a.m. prior to the school day. There is no cost to you. Join us and have breakfast with your child and his or her friends!
- Halloween Parties - This is a fun "dress-up" event for the children in their classrooms.
- Book Fair - The book fair is held in late fall and gives the student an opportunity to pick out a couple of new books for home and encourages them to read. Money earned during this event is 100% used to purchase new books for the classrooms and library.
- Christmas Parties - These parties are held just before Christmas and gives the children the opportunity to experience the joy of giving.
- Valentines Parties - Valentines and treats are exchanged in the classrooms.
- DARE - PTO helps to sponsor the DARE project. A law enforcement instructor teaches the 5th grade students about the dangers of drugs. This class is held during the school day and is completed with a special graduation ceremony.
- Teacher Appreciation Day - Every year the PTO treats the teachers to something special. We feel it is important to let them know how much we appreciate the way they help our children learn and grow. It is very important to have quality teachers and we feel very fortunate to have such a Terrific Staff!
- Movie & Y-Day - This is a fun conclusion to the school year. The children are treated to a special movie usually held in the gym and then bused to the Columbus YMCA for a half day of fun with their friends.
Hopefully this listing will give you an idea of some of the fun events taking place this year. These events will change periodically and notes are sent home in the "Friday Folder" and information is posted on this web site as well.
Throughout the school year, we have on-going fundraiser's to help support these events and to help purchase items like equipment for the playground and classrooms. The following is a list of items collected which are turned in to the sponsoring companies for cash.
- HyVee Grocery Receipts - Simply buy groceries at HyVee and send the receipt to school with your child. HyVee takes a percentage of the total amount of purchases and awards this back to the PTO.
- Box Tops for Education - On the top of most General Mills cereal and snack items you will find a "Box Top for Education" label. Simply cut out this label and send with your child to school. These are periodically mailed in for cash.
- Campbell's Soup Labels - Simply remove the label from the Campbell's cans and send to school with your child. Like the Box Tops, these are mailed in for cash.
We would love to have you join us at our PTO meetings held every other month, to learn more about what is happening at your child's school. As each event is planned, any assistance you can provide is always appreciated and new ideas are always welcome!
Once again,
WELCOME TO PLATTE CENTER ELEMENTARY!
