This step involves gathering information about yourself to assist in making a decision about a career. By developing an understanding of self values, interests, aptitudes, abilities, personal traits, and desired life style you should become aware of the interrelationship between self and occupational choice.


Personality Inventories

There are a variety of personality inventories available. Contact your counselor about completing them. You may wish to choose from the following on-line inventories:

Career Interest Test

Answer a series of shot question and view your personalized career report.

Ideal Life Style Inventory

This inventory is designed to help you identify values.

Keirsey Temperament Sorter

This personality test by David Keirsey which scores results according to the Meyers-Briggs system.

TechQuest 2000 Self Inventory

Explore career paths by focusing on and learning about yourself.



As you begin to develop a better understanding of yourself. You will gain the following competencies:

  • Develop personal/professional management skills


The following list gives concrete examples of ways to gain competencies for self-assessment.

  • Take exploratory classes
