The planning of the current church building began on April 11, 1901. Catholics in the region decided they had enough money for a bigger church so a newer, larger one was built. Many people donated items to the church including the non-Catholics of the town who donated the large bell for the steeple. When it was finished it was renowned as one of the most beautiful and well furnished churches in southeast Nebraska. Monsignor Lisko decided to build a new rectory and Catholic high school, which is now St. Mary's Grade School.
