Flu hits Leigh High
It’s winter time again and everyone knows what that means. That's right its flu season. As most people know it has been especially bad this year. There are many cases of children even dying from the flu this year.

Most students at Leigh High have had a taste of this flu and they can tell you it doesn’t feel good. Junior Talia Neuhaus said she had, “a really bad chest cold and sore throat.” It has been so bad in the high school that there have been up to eighteen people gone at one time.

The question is if the flu is letting up or going to get worse. There are people who believe that the flu is letting up. While others believe that its only getting started.

Some people say that since its only December we have a whole winter to go yet. When asked if she thought the flu was letting down junior Ashley Folken said, “No, not at all. The flu vaccine is running low, and the flu has not even hit Leigh School hard yet.”

Other people say that it is letting down, and the worst of it is over. When asked if the flu was letting down Senior Iris Ortez said, “Yes, less people are getting it. More people are getting the flu shot.” Either way people choose to look at it. There is no denying that the flu hit hard this year. So doctors advise that people drink lots of liquids and try to stay warm.

Reality Shows
Are they fad or here to stay

by Talia Neuhaus

It’s seven o’clock at night and you are just sitting down to watch your favorite reality show.
Junior, Christa Hake said “The Simple Life, The Bachelor and Ryan/Trista’s Wedding are some of her favorite reality shows.” Most people like watching reality shows because they are something new. But that doesn’t mean anything, are the reality shows a fad or are they here to stay? Christa said “I think they are just a fad and people will get tired of them eventually.”

What do people find appealing about reality shows? Tiffany Mullenhoff replied “People can relate with the reality show, they’re just regular people like us.” Tiffany also thinks “Reality shows are a fad in this day and age. I think something new and big will eventually take over- just like Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and other trivia shows were so huge a few years ago.” It wouldn’t surprise the world if someone was coming up with a new reality show right now.

Why would people want to make fools of themselves? Tiffany, a junior said “They do it for fame, recognition and money.” Tiffany has a very good point because that all they do is make fools of themselves for a million dollars. So, when someone asks you to be on a reality show remember you will be make a fool of yourself.

Reality shows good or bad? It’s your decision.

Strong Inside Game
Wiemer & Hollatz lead Panthers

by Tiffany Mullenhoff

Domination inside took the Lady Panthers to their second win of the season, as they trampled the Humphrey High Bulldogs with a 60-26 victory on December 5.

“We are quick, we play as a team, and we have a lot of depth,” said senior Nicole Wiemer about the Panther’s strengths this season. The Panthers took control of the inside game, as Wiemer put up 21 points for the Panthers. In the number four spot, junior, Janelle Hollatz stepped up to add 12 points to lead in offense. These posts also led in rebounding, as Wiemer pulled down 7 bounds, and Hollatz grabbed 6 of her own.

Not only the team dominate on the inside, but also in forcing the turnovers. Sophomore, Kayla Wietfeld led the team in steals swiping off 4 passes. Sophomore Tatum Wiemer also added 3 steals, while sophomore, Stephanie Larson and junior, Christa Hake contributed with 2 each.

“You have to play with the same intensity no matter how good, or bad the team,” said Wiemer. The Panthers kept up their intensity throughout, with players subbing in and out consistently, and after a 34-10 half time lead, there was no turning back. The Panthers rallied to hold the Bulldogs to just 3 points the third, upping the score 13-54 going into the fourth quarter, sending the Bulldogs back to the pound with the 60-26 final.

“St. Fran is next- it will be a tough physical game, but I love those. I think we will stick with them all the way,” said Wiemer about the team’s next opponent. The team plans to build on these first two games of success and take on the Bulldog’s next door neighbor, St. Fran, on December 11.

Mustang Match up
Disappointing loss for Jr. High

by Brianne Hake

“To try and win,” said seventh grader Dylan Went of the team’s goal that day. When the Stanton mustangs came to town on Saturday, December 6, the Panthers were looking for a victory. What followed was a well fought match, but the mustangs were the victors..this time.

“We played okay, but could have played alot better,”said seventh grader Dylan Went. The final scores for the two games were 21-57 for the seventh grade and 19-49 for the eighth grade.

Went was the leading scorer for the seventh grade game with 9 points, including a three pointer. Right behind him was Devin Koch with 7 points, being 2 for 3 on his free throws. Racking up the rest of the points were Dakota McGuire with 3 and Boone McAfee with 2. “The most exciting part of the game was in the second half when we started to play a little better on offense and defense,” commented Dylan.
“We could have executed the plays and played better defense to improve,” said Dylan. The eighth graders put up a fight and kept the mustangs in check for the first half. Leading the team with 6 points each were Cody McCutcheon and Dylan Went. Travis Went took one to the boards for two points as did seventh grader Boone McAfee who sank two free throws.

As in every game there is the good and the bad. “Our team’s weaknesses were making shots fall into the basket and our strength was drawing fouls from the other team.” Their next game is December 16 in Dodge at 3:30.

Freshman Loss
Panther’s Lose In Overtime!

by Amanda Wendt

December 8th at 6:15 in Columbus the Freshman Boy Basketball team took on Lakeview in a close and disappointing loss.

“Finding good open shots,” is what Freshman Reed Janousek thought the team did really well on. It showed at the half when Leigh was leading 17 to 14. After half time was over the boys were ready to seal the deal and started the third and fourth quarters.

With the excitement mounting and emotions running high the final seconds of the game started to show a close finish. With a minute left Leigh was down by two, but with 16 seconds to go Reed scored to put both teams at 32 and looking at a close overtime. With 46 seconds left in overtime Leigh had the ball and were ahead by one. Unfortunately, Lakeview managed to get the ball back and score, leaving Leigh with 35 and Lakeview with 36. With one last free throw shot for Lakeview with 10 seconds left on the clock, they took their victory with a 3 point win of 35 to 37.

“Some thing we could improve on is our passing,” Reed said. With that in mind the Freshman put this loss behind them and move on.

It was a great fight and their focus will now shift to their next game on the 13th against Dodge.

Last Performance
One-Act ends at Districts

by Christa Hake

As the participants of the 2003 One-Act team traveled to Osceola on the foggy morning of December 3rd, everyone was nervous about what the day would bring. Even though the cast performed the play to the best of their abilities, the judges ranked them lower than expected. Leigh received 6th out of 8 total schools competing.

Being the first play of the day had some definite advantages and disadvantages. “The auditorium was light as daylight so it made our black outs nearly impossible. Some of our scenes didn’t work out so well,” said senior writer and actress, Nicole Wiemer.

Although the lighting may have been a problem, the cast got their nerves out of the way by being first. Then they could relax the rest of the day while watching the plays from nearby schools.
Even though the play didn’t rank very high with the judges, the play sends a good message to the audience.

“I wrote the play because it deals with some of the problems in teen lives today; not necessarily pregnancies, but how easy it is to feel like no one cares,” stated Wiemer. The play helps listeners to understand that no matter what, everyone needs someone to count on and be able to talk to. And the actors portray the parts very well.

“The cast worked very well together. The parts fit the characters, so that made things flow nicely,” said Wiemer.

Even though the 2003 One-Act cast and crew were disappointed when the season ended at districts, everyone gained experience that they will all use in the future.

by Mickey Olmer

Basketball is finally here, and off to a great start. The LHS Panther’s have been practicing hard and it has only begun to pay off. With one win under their belts, everyone has a positive out-look for this upcoming season.

“Just to show people we are a good team, and we have a lot of potential,” comments junior Janelle Hollatz, as she stated the team’s goals going into the game. As the Panther’s made the long jaunt to Cedar Rapids, focusing on coming out strong and playing a good game was on everyone’s mind. That was exactly what they did, coming out strong and winning the game by 33 points.

Janelle was the leading scorer of the game with 20 points, sophomore, Tatum Wiemer followed close behind with 15 points including two three-point shots. Senior, Nicole Wiemer also chipped in with 10 of her own points for the night.

“Coming out with a big win and showing other teams we will be a challenge,” is what Janelle says were the most exciting moments of the game. Leigh may have a young team, but that definitely isn’t going to stand in the way of having a great season. “To be a good, quick team, and have fun,” are Janelle’s expectations for this season. Both the fans and players are have the same expectations as the Panther’s begin the season.
The Lady Panthers will be back in action in their upcoming games against Humphrey High, St. Francis, and Lindsay Holy Family.

Panthers Outdone
Freshman girls fall to Vikings

by Justine McMullin

December 8 was a night of many firsts for the Leigh freshmen girls basketball team, as they traveled to Lakeview to battle it out with the Vikings. It was the first game of the year, the first time Leigh girls have played Lakeview, and the first high school basketball game for the freshmen girls. Despite all their hard work the girls were unable to walk away victorious, losing 22-48.

“I don’t think the team played very good-everyone had first game jitters,” freshman Alisha Brabec commented. The freshmen girls struggled throughout the game and only managed to score five points in the first half.

Brabec was the leading scorer in the game with nine points. Justine McMullin followed close behind with eight points, while Megan Bruhn had three points and Mickey Olmer chipped in with two points.
“We did a good job hustling but we need to have less turnovers and work on rebounding and catching the ball before the next game,” Brabec added. With the first game already in the books, Brabec is looking toward the rest of the season. Her outlook for the rest of the season is, “Every game is going to be a tough match, but I think we will keep improving and we should have a good year.”

The girls freshmen team has 5 more games to go this year. They will be back in action on Saturday, December 13, in a freshmen-sophomore game in Dodge at 3:30.

Cat, Dog Fight
Boys Basketball continues on to 2-0.

by Nicole Wiemer

The cats win this time. Usually, when cats and dogs fight the outcome is different, but with a lot of heart, the cats prevailed with an impressive 58-47 win over the Humphrey High Bulldogs.

“We figured that they wouldn’t be a very tough team, but we couldn’t overlook them,” commented senior, Drew Huisman about Friday’s game, “I knew we were going to win.”

The Panther’s confidence surely showed in the first half as they outscored the Bulldogs 30-18. But Humphrey was not content to lay down and let the Panthers bury them, as they dug their way out of a 12 point hole to climb to within 3.

“They had a pretty good comeback in the 3rd, so we took it to them in the 4th quarter,” added Huisman. And took it to them they did, as the Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 18-10 in the 4th quarter.
Leading the fight was sophomore, Cole Fischer who recorded a team high 15 points, while seniors, Drew Huisman, Kyle Brabec, and Josh Gall, add 14, 11, and 10 points a piece.

On the defensive end the Panthers dominated the boards pulling down 46 rebounds compared to Humphrey’s 30. Josh Gall pulled down 12 boards and Kyle Brabec grabbed himself 11.
The Panthers are set to play Lindsay Holy Family in the Lindsay Marathon on Friday the 12th.

Something to Prove
Varsity boys pound Lindsay Bulldogs

by Christa Hake

It was the fourth game of the night, and as the last game the Leigh High boys basketball team had something to prove. Proving that they couldn’t be stopped. Their plan was a success on December 12 as the boys brought down the Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs 59-42.

“We prepared for the game by working on our full court defense and our shooting. We also wanted to keep the tempo up and get their big guys tired,” said Kyle Brabec, senior.

It was neck and neck as the Bulldogs put up a strong fight but the Panthers wouldn’t give in. And the Panthers soon pulled ahead for good.

Kyle Brabec played an outstanding game, leading the Panthers with 31 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals. Following behind Brabec were classmate Drew Huisman chipping in 10 points and sophomore guard Cole Fischer adding 10 also. Senior, Craig Muhle and junior post Tim Gall pitched in 6 rebounds each while senior Vance Wietfeld also managed 10 total rebounds to aid in the victory.

“The best part of the game was looking up at the score clock when the game was over and seeing that we beat Lindsay,” stated Brabec.

The next game for the Panthers is scheduled for December 19th at Prague when the boys will hope to go 4-0.

Flyers Soar Away
Girls JV shot down by St. Fran

by Justine McMullin

The Leigh girls JV basketball team made their way to the Humphrey St. Francis gym, home of the Flyers, on Thursday night, December 11. The intimidating Flyers were too tough for the Panthers to handle as the Flyers press led to many turnovers. The Panther girls JV team lost to St. Francis 20-42.

“Coach Osten knew we could have done a lot better, but she also told us that we take this experience and use it for the next game to work on,” stated sophomore, Jessica Herink. One of the biggest problems the Panthers faced was setting up their offense. They struggled to get shots off throughout the game, as they took 21 less shots than their opponent.

Freshmen, Alisha Brabec led the scoring for the night, with 9 points. Christa Hake chipped in with 6 points and Jenny Olson scored 5 points. Brabec also led the way in rebounds, with 8. Olson followed with 6, while Christa Hake, Tiffany Mullenhoff, Justine McMullin, and Andrea Hillen each contributed with 3.

“Our biggest strength throughout the game was that we never gave up and just kept trying. But we need to work on turning the ball over less and boxing out more,” Herink said. After being down 8-25 after the first half, the Panthers kept playing their hardest and held the Flyers to fewer points in the second half.
Other contributing players for the Panthers include junior, Amanda Bayer, with 4 blocked shots, freshman, Mickey Olmer, with 3 assists, and freshman, Brianne Hake, with 1 steal.

Miralces DO Happen
Boys win on Cole Ficsher’s last second shot

by Drew Huisman

The is 9.7 seconds on the clock and you are down by 1 point. What do you do? Most of the time you set up a play to get your best shooter open. This is what the Panthers had planned, but things didn’t happen that way.

Christmas Jitters
T’was the hour before break

by Christa Hake

T’was the hour before Christmas break and all through the high school, all the students were excited to be getting away from the rules. The books were shut and the papers done, in hopes that there’d be no more of that fun.

The teachers were frantic and all running about; with visions that end -of-semester grades would be sent out. And Mr. Borer in his office and Cindy at her desk, counting down the minutes ‘til vacation at last.
When out in the hall there arose such a clatter, the students sprang out of the rooms to see what was the matter. Away to the hallway they flew in a hurry, tore open the doors to see all the fury.

The lights that were hung above the lockers were glowing as they gave the signal that outside it was snowing! When, what to our wondering eyes should appear, but Josh Gall in the hall with his hands in the air.

He sprang out the door, to the school he gave a whistle, And away we all flew with the speed of a missile. But we heard him exclaim as he ran out of sight, “It’s Christmas break, no more homework tonight!”

A Week Later
Christmas Concert is a success

by Mickey Olmer

After a weather scare and a postponement of one week the annual Christmas program for Leigh Community Schools was given on Monday, December 21.

“We practiced our selections every day in Band and Choir, and worked out all of the hard sections,” states junior, Amanda Bayer. The students at both the High School and Grade School have been working and preparing for this night since November.

The gym was full of parents and grandparents who came to watch the students perform.
The night was a great success. All the students did a great job, from the little Kindergartners to the Seniors in High School. Favorites of the night were the song, A Christmas Canon played by the High School band, and One Bright Star sung by the High School choir.

“I think the night went pretty well, but it wasn’t so good when the concert got postponed last Monday,” said Amanda Bayer, on her opinion of the night. The concert may have been postponed, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits.

Kevin Welsch, director, received many compliments from the audience. He was pleased with the night’s performance, and complemented the student’s on a job well done.
