What's Happening in the Library?

wesselWe just finished a reading incentive program called READ AROUND THE WORLD.  This program is sponsored by the Henry Doorly Zoo.  Basically, all the kids had to do was read books and then write the titles on the sheet that was handed out.  This challenge was given to many schools around the state.  The school reading the most books will be given a free day at the Henry Doorly Zoo for Grades k-6.  The incentive program started after Thanksgiving and ended the end of February.  We did pretty well for the first year.  We read a total of 631 books.  That is 7.29 books per student in kindergarten through 6th Grade.  Not all students handed in incentive sheets.  It could have been quite a few more.  We will find out in early March if we have won the contest.  Students will receive a special reward for reading by bringing their signed book sheets to the zoo on March 15, 2008, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  The students and their family will need to use their zoo membership or pay zoo admission to get in.  During this time, zoo staff and special guests will read stories from around the world in the Lied Jungle, Scott Aquarium, Wild Kingdom Pavilion and Desert Dome.  The day will be filled with activities, stories and special animal presentations.  If you have a chance to go, I am sure you would have a fun time.  Thanks to all students who participated.  Reading opens many doors!!
