ACCELERATED READER:
AN INCENTIVE
READING PROGRAM AT SUNRISE!
The Accelerated Reader Program, a Computerized Reading
Management
System, is again being used at Sunrise Elementary in Grades 1-8. This
program
encourages students to read books at their own level and then take
computerized tests on the books. Students who pass the tests receives
points which can be accumulated and turned in for prizes such as
pencils, rulers, stickers, movie passes, toys, or sports equipment. The
following students are point leaders for their class as of November
21, 2003.

Grade and Third Grade Buddies Program
Every year the 7th Graders and the
3rd Graders are paired up with a partner and adopt each other as Big
and Little Buddies.
Many learning activities will be
experienced by both Buddies during the year. This year the 7th
and 3rd Graders adopted each other shortly after the school year
began.
Each Thursday an activity is
planned that is a fun learning activity. Since the beginning of
this year, Buddies have read stories to each other on a regular basis
(please encourage your own children to READ... READ... READ!)
learned to color a picture in dot matrix form, had word activities,
learned to play four new and different kinds of checker games, painted
faces on pumpkins, learned about the environment through "Birds and
Worms," and challenged each other to a soccer game.
These activities are great
learning experiences that teach students to share, be responsible, work
together, make decisions, and become better readers. Just seeing
the smiles on everyones' faces as they learn is very rewarding.

4-H
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Mr. Steve Jahn, 7th
Grade
Teacher at Sunrise Elementary School, was recently honored as 4-H
Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001. Mr. Jahn teaches Science, Math,
Reading, and Health to the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades. After teaching
for 22 years at Sunrise Elementary, Mr. Jahn says the best part of
teaching is the students. In his free time, Mr. Jahn enjoys fishing,
gardening, and spending time with his family. According to Lisa
Kaslon, Platte County Extension Assistant, "Mr. Jahn's classroom is
that of fun and learning. I think he believes without the two
together, nothing will be accomplished." CONGRATULATIONS
MR. JAHN!
